EsadeGeo Weekly Asia-Pacific Briefing, July 17-23

The Olympic Games 2021 of Japan have been inaugurated today, amidst Covid-19 scares and other scandals. This is happening as the Delta variant is wreaking havoc all over the continent – indeed, even the trans-Tasman travel bubble has now been suspended due to rising cases in Sydney. Australian PM Scott Morrison has apologised for a slow vaccine rollout.

China seems to be trapped in its zero-covid policy, without a way out of restrictions. In the past week, dozens died in floods in the city of Zhengzhou and, for the first time since he ascended to the Presidency, Xi Jinping has visited Tibet. A diplomatic spat between US and China has also been resolved.

A study shows that two thirds of Indians have covid antibodies. In Afghanistan, rockets were shot at the presidential palace. Iran is suffering from acute water scarcity, leading to protests and unrest. Finally, Japan’s net-zero commitment is being met with fierce internal debate.
